MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesotans won’t see temperatures above zero for a few days.
Overnight, thermometer readings in many parts of the state hit the negative double digits. In the Twin Cities metro, it was around 11 below at one point, and in northern Minnesota, near Bemidji, it was as low as 27 below.
And even as the mercury crept up Sunday morning, the wind chill made it feel like 20-30 below zero.
The combination of subzero cold and strong winds were enough to prompt wind chill warnings and advisories throughout the state. In such frigid conditions, exposed skin can suffer frostbite in a matter of minutes.
WCCO-TV meteorologist Mike Augustyniak says the stretch of arctic cold days comes with an absence of clouds and storm systems.
“We’re just dealing with the cold the next few days,” Augustyniak said. “Good travel weather, in the sense that the roads will be clear.”
He did note, however, that black ice can form from exhaust instantly freezing on roadways.
Looking ahead, Monday’s highs won’t likely break zero, although it won’t be as cold as Sunday.
Tuesday will start off with negative temperatures, before warming up into the single digits.
From there, the warm-up will continue, and by next weekend, Minnesota will be feeling balmy.
Saturday’s highs are expected to be in the mid-30s.
That means that in the span of a week, some Minnesotans could see a temperature change of nearly 60 degrees.
